This interactive site sponsored by the Library of Congress allows students to discover the stories of America’s past. 

 

Ask a World War II Veteran
The questions have already been asked, but you can still download two vidoes about WWII and an accompanying study guide at this site. In addition, you can listen to a replay of the Ask A Veteran program.

 

Awesome America

While this website is a bit heavy on the advertisements, it also offers a quick and attractive way to find out about each of the 50 states.  You can view the state bird, flower, map and flag.  The site also provides demographic and other information about each state. 

 

 

Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids
Also listed in the "Games" section, this site offers activities, information and printable as well as interactive games, divided by grade level.

 

Canadian Museum of Civilization

Explore ancient civilizations and learn about other cultures via the games and activities for kids at the CmofC.  The site offers interactive adventures, crossword puzzles, coloring pages and quizzes.   In the Journey to Kitigaaryuk you can explore the history and culture of the Inuvialuit people.  You can also explore a Victorian house, King Tut’s Tomb and New France.

 

 

 

 

Common-Place

Sponsored by the American Antiquarian Society and Florida State University Department of History this site is “a common place for exploring and exchanging ideas about early American history and culture.”  The quarterly web magazine features articles, images and other information about American history and culture both the ordinary and the unusual.  Browse the index for highlights from previous issues.  Caution: The intended audience for this site is the adult reader so some content may not be appropriate for your younger students.  Please pre-screen the site before allowing your children access.  The Common Place website will also guide you to several other historical-interest websites worth reviewing.

 

 

 

Department of Veterans Affairs Kid's Page
This website provides activities and learning opportunities for children in grades K-12th and has a separate page of resources for teachers. Teach your child about the sacrifices our veterans have made. Features include facts about veterans, games and activities and information about our flag.

 

Department of Veterans Affairs Virtual Museum
This site based out of the VA Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio offers a virtual tour of the National Military Home as it existed in 1885. You may also view images from a lengthy list of exhibits that will allow your child to see what service to one's country was like over 100 years ago.

 

Do History

The Do History website is centered on the life of Martha Ballard, the woman whose diaries were used in the creation of A Midwife’s Tale.  The site provides learning tools to assist you in developing your own examination of the lives of ordinary people from the past to discover their history.  Caution: One of the example stories featured on the website involves a crime not suitable for presentation to children. The site would be best suited for an older student learning to do primary research into historical topics. 

 

 

Euratlas

At this website you can view historic and current maps of Europe.  The maps are interactive and include major geographical features.  In addition, the site hosts over 500 images of European and Mediterranean towns, landmarks and landscapes.

On this site, select your target state from a U.S. map and see a list of factories that allow tours. 

 

Flags of the World
This site is dedicated to vexillology. And if you think I knew that word before I visited the website, thanks for the vote of confidence but, no, I'm not quite that smart. Anyway, the site sorts it's pages by country or you can use a clickable map to find the flag you need. Coloring pages for various flags are provided as well as information about the flags and images of them. The website also provides links to other useful websites and of course, information about the upcoming International Congress of Vexillology.

Garden of Praise Famous Leaders for Young Readers

This portion of the Garden of Praise website provides a set of online biographies of famous individuals through the ages.  Each story includes a free printable activity.  This website hosts a limited number of unobtrusive Google ads.

This site promises over 2000 files covering 3,000 years of world history! Entries are sorted by time, name, event, topic area and other options. View special lifelines for famous individuals in history. (The site also sells a hardcopy of these timeline resources.)

Browse the collection by topic or use the "Today in History" link to discover a new piece of America's past each day. Click on the
Teachers  link to find lesson plans, activities and other great teaching resources.

 

Making of America

This site serves as an online archive of digital copies of primary documents related to the formation of the United States of America.  The entire collection consists of 10,000 books and 50,000 journal articles. 

 

 

 

Mayflower History

This website offers a variety of resources for learning about the Mayflower.  There are pictures and drawings of the ship; it’s history and ownership. There are also maps of the route taken, information about the pilgrims’ exploration of Cape Cod, the natives who lived there, plus much more.  The host of this site offers some books about the Mayflower for sale but the online resources are available free of charge. 

 

 

National Constitution Center
Play a virtual game called "Save the Bill of Rights!", view timelines, and more at this site.

 

Plimoth Plantation

This website, hosted by the Plimoth Plantation Museum, offers 17th century pilgrim themed coloring pages, recipes, stories, and facts.

 

 

Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery- George Washington
The site has several activities for kids related to George Washington and his portrait. This site also offers a downloadable Teacher's Guide providing a lesson plan to introduce students to the life of our first president.

 

Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery- Portraits of Character
A newspaper feature including a portrait of from the national gallery collection and a related story about the sitter. Available online or in PDF. A great complement to your history studies.

 

Smithsonian Institution National Gallery Presents The Civil War
Includes an introductory movie, time line, portraits and other useful information.

 

State by State Booklist

This list, sponsored by the National Education Association, provides a list of books that feature specific states within the story or are written by authors from that state.  The list is sorted by state and offers both fiction and non-fiction selections. 

 

 

The National Archive Experience 
View digitized images of some of nations most important documents and participate in interactive learning experiences at this website for the National Archive Experience.  Note:  The National Archive Experience is actually a display in Washington, D.C., so some of the materials are only available at that location.  The website offers limited access to some of the experience online.  In particular, the
Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom offers several online resources both visual and audio.

 

Think Quest The Journey to America
At this website you can read articles, view images, read stories in their own words, and study timelines about the American Immigration story. You can learn about Ellis Island and the Statute of Liberty too.

 

Time for Kids- Go Places

This website provides a sightseeing guide, fact file, history timeline, language tips and a quiz for several major countries on each continent.  Visitors can create a “Go Places” Passport and note each country they visit. 

 

 

U.S. Mint Time Machine
Explore the history of money with this interactive feature at the U.S. Mint website.

 

Virtual Jamestown

This site is a “digital research, teaching and learning project” about the Jamestown settlement and the Virginia Experiment.  The site was started in 1999 in anticipation of 2007’s four hundred-year anniversary of the founding of Jamestown. 

 

Westward Ho! Wagontrain
An annual cyber-journey along the western trail with other cyber-pioneers. Sign up is in January of each year.

 

World Atlas
This site offers printable flags, answers geography and map questions and provides images of maps from all over the world. You can find out the current time at any location in the world, determine distances, take a quiz, or convert currency at this website. The site is a very pop-up heavy but the geography information provided is very detailed and useful.
