Brightly Beaming Resources
A comprehensive online curriculum with suggestions for children from ages 3 months to 8 years. Most well known for the pre-K "Letter of the Week" program.

 

Carl's Corner 
This site offers a wonderful selection of printables and other resources to encourage early reading skills.  It's one of my favorite sites.  Visit the
Calendar section for a cut-out bear pattern and patterns for seasonal clothing!

 

Cram School
This site offers free courses in reading, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary.  The site also offers resources for managing dyslexia.  This website does request donations and also features Google advertisements.

 

Don Potter's Phonics and Reading Programs Page 
These links on teacher Don Potter's website will take you to a variety of free phonics and reading instruction manuals and programs available online.   This is a very comprehensive site including articles, resources, reviews and more.  If you need to learn all about phonics, this is a great place to start.   

 

Informal Reading Assessment

This link is to a pdf document created by homeschooler Tamra Monroe at Highland Heritage intended to allow you to score your child’s ability to read common words.  Tamra has several other documents and other resources on her site as well. 

 

Literactive 
This site is free with registration and provides many resources for teaching your child to read.  The website indicates that "the program is comprised of carefully levelled guided readers, comprehensive phonic activities and a wealth of supplemental reading materials which gradually develop a child's reading skills..."  Wow, does it have a lot of stuff!  Resources include e-poetry and e-picture books, learning activities, black line masters, guided reading, worksheets and lots more.  There's also a Spanish section for those learing English as a second language. From this website after registration you can download a free copy of Road to Reading which is a complete phonics learning program. 

 

McGuffey Eclectic Primer 
Available in digital form at the Gutenberg Project, these primers were used by many of our parents to learn to read.  A  McGuffey's Eclectic Spelling Book is avaiable as well.

Download a free comprehensive phonics program from this website or view it online.

 

Reading By Six
This site offers online lessons to teach your child to read. Registration is required and the site is "free" but donations are strongly encouraged. The site also offers links to other online educational resources be sure to scroll down to see the linked resources, the links at the top are Google ads. 

 

Reading Games by Adrian Bruce
This parent created website does have lots of Google ads, but also offers several printables and word games to assist you in teaching your child phonics. Selections include games for the vowel sounds, and sight words.  You can also find printable motivational posters, phonics posters and more. Adrian's also added a math Games room. Sign up for the e-newsletter for the latest updates from this website.   

 

Reading is Fundamental
The "nation's largest children's literacy organization". Reading activity calendars, resources in Spanish, literacy games for kids, printable parents guides, booklists, contests and lots of other resouces can be found at this website.

 

SillyBooks.net (added 6/08)

This site provides free access to books written by child authors.  Your child can submit a story  or read the ones created by others.  The site also includes cartoons, jokes, and games that encourage reading skills.  Note: Since these books are written by young authors of all ages and interests, you may wish to pre-screen the site to assess it’s appropriateness for your family. 

 

Stairways to Reading Program (Added March 2008)

Sponsored by the Society for Quality Education, this Canadian site offers a full reading curriculum free of charge.  The program includes a printable initial diagnostic test,reading lessons, flashcards and games.

 

Starfall
This is a fabulous website with several resources for helping you teach your child to read. It combines games, “movies” and lesson to take your child from start to finish. Several of the lessons are available free of charge on a CD that you can have sent to your home or you can play all the games and view lessons and movies free online. The site also offers free printable early reader booklets, use this link or go to the "Download Center" from the main Starfall page. Books and other materials can also be purchased from the Starfall site.

 

Study Dog
This is an excellent program that you can use at home on your computer to teach your children to read. It begins with the introduction of each letter and its sound and take the child all they way through learning rhyme and beyond. The downloadable software is free to families that qualify.

 

The National Right to Read Foundation

This website offers a free phonics primer and reading competency test.  In addition the site offers several informational and research-based articles about reading and reading instruction. 

 

 

The Phonics Page
From the website:  "The Phonics Page is a free service offered out of love for Jesus Christ. It has information about improving reading and spelling with phonics. Free phonics lessons and spelling lessons for adults and children in the 2nd grade and older are provided in QuickTime movie format. A movie explaining phonics, literacy statistics, and the need for phonics is also provided, along with written instructions for teaching young children to read."  Check out the "Other" section of the website for additional information on education topics.  This is a really neat site- be sure and visit when you get a chance!

 

Weber Public Library
This site offers reading lists by age and also lists books by various categories, including award winners.
