BeeWeb.org
Sponsored by Brandeis University this group of websites includes SpellBee and PatternBee as well as GeograBee, MoneyBee, CalcuBee and (hopefully arriving in 2008) MeloBee. Activities are interactive and allow participants to “play” against other online users. Registration is required, but is free. Once registered, participants can access any of the “bee” games.
SpellBee.org offers an interactive spelling game where participants work together to develop their spelling skills. The current list of vocabulary words is fixed with an inventory of 3000 words from which to choose.
PatternBee.org allows registered users to compete in creating patterns using unique tangram forms. Points are earned for creating and solving patterns and play is interactive with other participants via the internet.
CalcuBee.org allows students to use a virtual calculator to creat arithmetic problems for other players.
At GeograBee.org participants can challenge one another’s knowledge of basic U.S. geography.
MoneyBee.org allows players to challenge each other with currency based questions.
Berenstain Bear Country
This is an interactive website all about the Berenstain Bears. The website includes information about the characters from the Berenstain Bear series, illustrations, games, videos and more.
Dositey
Free online games for various age groups- including games for math, language arts and more.
Fun Brain
Funbrain.com offers resources for parents and teachers as well as downloadable and online games for the kids. As with the other sites, games are sorted by subject matter. My oldest child enjoyed the playing games here though we couldn't quite figure out the password system.
Gamequarium.com
There are a few flashing words and advertisements on this site, but the educational game listings are extensive. You can locate links to games on an incredibly number of topics and even find resources to create your own games or lesson plans.
Guiding Light Video's Games and Activities
Note: there's a volume bar about 1/3 of the way down the page that allows you to turn off the music, and you will want to turn off the music. These are very simple games with limited graphics but the might be fun for your younger children. Selections include a jigsaw puzzle, coloring book, Breakout and Tetris style games plus a math guess game. There are also several Christian-themed coloring pages available for printing.
Houghton Mifflin Education Place
This site is currently offering 4 games, Fake Out!, Geonet, Spelling Match and Web Word Find.
I Know That
This site is available as a free with pop-ups, or paid version. I opted for the pay version as I can't stand pop-ups. If you become a member, you can set up different "accounts" for each family member and choose the communication and other options for each account. Children can create content or save scores to share with family members that you've placed on their "friends" list. The site covers a wide variety of subject matter and skill levels and is updated regularly with new content. My kids enjoy the interactive movies and the 'make your own' areas.
Kid Printables
This site is a little heavy on the advertising, but does have an online version of Yahtzee that's handy for teaching math. There are also several other games, flashcards, coloring pages and puzzles available from this site. If you are adverse to flashing advertisements though- you'll not enjoy visiting.
Little Fingers Games
These are games built using Shockwave, they are colorful and have fun sound effects, yet still teach the little ones something. The age range probably goes up to early middle school but the illustrations are geared toward the younger set. It's a cute site with some cute games.
PBS Kids
This is the PBS Kids official website where they feature games related to the PBS programming characters. There are a lot games and activities to choose from here. If your children don't watch TV or you are not fond of some of the PBS characters, you might want to steer clear of this one. But otherwise, it's a site where the little ones can find plenty to keep them entertained and learning.
PBS Kids-Dragonfly TV
These games are accessible through the PBS Kids site, but are targeted toward older middle school children. The subject matters covered are more sophisticated- such as building simple machines or using lasers. The characters are not ones that I recognize from the PBS shows that we are able to view and I've never seen Dragonfly TV so I can't tell if the characters are taken from that programming. My oldest child likes playing a game that challenges him to get an object from one side of the screen to the other by properly placing various machine parts. Of course, shooting lasers is always fun too.
Play Kids Games
This site has a sophisticated opening page that allows you to select from a variety of games sorted by subject matter.
Primary Games
The games section of Primarykids.com, this site offers a variety of games sorted by subject matter. We particularly enjoy Arithmetiles. Some of the games are sponsored by advertisers and feature the sponsor's product as a key component of the game. Other games, such as Arithmetiles, are limited as to options available when playing online. To purchase the unlimited version of the game, you are referred to a third party game download website that might not be suitable for all the members of your family.
School Time Games
Find a wide variety of educational online games at this ad-supported web site. Most of the games will be limited because these are the online versions of games available for purchase. I particularly enjoy the game Arithmetiles, but there are many others that look worth a try. Available themes include Social Studies, Language Arts, Science, Mathematics, Sports, Logic, Art and Music, and Arcade Games. Caution: Some games may feature themes or images not suitable for your family, so pleas pre-screen your selections.
Sheppard Software
This site offers some relatively sophisticated games for the older student. Activities include learning the names of countries and their capitals, medical terms, chemical elements and much more. Please preview this site to make sure the content conforms to your beliefs and that the content is not too mature for your younger learners.
Up to Ten
This site is designed for younger children and includes singing in English and French. My 2 year old really finds the characters on this site hilarious.
Woodlands Junior School Interactive Activities
This website based in the UK features games and other interactive activities in math, literacy and science as well as a few games just for fun.
BBC Words & Pictures
This website has early learning games focussing on CVC words, high frequency words and vowel sounds as well as additional games covering more advanced phonics lessons.
East of the Web Word Games
This site offers a variety of word games that are very sophisticated. You can choose the subject area of "words" that you want included. The topics range from dinosaurs to Beatles songs. Caution: I recommend that you supervise your child's selection of topics so that the game doesn't include words you aren't ready for them to see.
Free Rice (Added 12/07)
Improve your child’s vocabulary and donate rice. For each word you define correctly, 20 grains of rice are donate through the United Nations.
Magnetic Poetry
This is a game you may recognize, words blocks are placed on a "magnetic" screen and your child may move them around to create their own poems. I have the "real" set with a metal mug from years ago when these were a popular gift item. (Not that I'm saying I'm old!) I didn't see any words that were offensive and there are a limited number to choose from, but you may still want to pre-screen the words yourself. Note- The game page is surrounded by Google text ads.
Word Blender
A blender with a UK accent asks you to help him make words by "blending".
